I don't know if you are supposed to turn it off, but as HeatherC mentioned, it would probably burn out faster. The three soft key lights on my Optimus 4X now stay illuminated permanently. Even when the phone is switched off, they remain lit. I went so far as to completely drain the battery (or so I thought) so that there was insufficient power to turn the device on but the lights are still on.
